Diaperkind is a cloth diaper service based right here in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
We’re here to provide you with a weekly supply of 100% organic cotton diapers
that we launder using an EPA-certified plant-derived detergent.
So that, in the process, we leave the smallest eco-footprint possible.
If you’d like to cloth diaper but find the prospect to be overwhelming, then consider us your one-stop low-fuss solution!

How does the Service work?
Here’s where it all starts:
-
•We provide you with a full week of diapers. Directly to your door. For a flat weekly price.
-
•The diapers are delivered in a water resistant hamper bag that doubles as your diaper pail liner.
-
•Once the diaper is dirty, just shake any solids into the toilet* and toss it into the hamper bag.
-
•At the end of the week, cinch the hamper bag closed and put (just the dirties)out for pick-up.
-
•Our driver then swings by and swaps it out with a new bag filled with the diapers picked up and laundered from the week before!
*until a baby begins eating solid foods, poopy diapers can be tossed into the hamper bag just the same as pee-pee diapers. However, when solid foods kick in, it’s important to plunk the solid poo into the toilet before tossing the diaper into the hamper bag. Don’t let this scare you. It’s really pretty simple - and is something you should be doing with disposables as well. The big bonus: a low-odor diaper pail.
How does Delivery work?
We deliver between 9 p.m. - 3 a.m. one night per week** to an area within your building that you’ve determined to be secure (for the diapers) and accessible to our driver. The options usually chosen are:
-
-with your doorman
-
-in front of your apartment door via your doorman
-
-inside your unlocked building vestibule or lobby
-
-inside your locked vestibule or lobby (you provide us with a building key*)
-
-in front your apartment door (you provide us with a building key)
-
-For families living in Peter Cooper Village or Stuyvesant Town, we have a super easy system. When you’re on the Sign-Up page, just select “Peter Cooper/Stuy Town - at apt door” from the list of exchange options and we’ll give you the short set-up when we send you your official confirmation.
Heads up: we’re afraid that buzzing you each week isn’t an option, so a quick, stealthy and seamless spot is required.
*For any spot that requires a building key, we send you a stamped “Key Kit” in which you can return it to us.
**On Monday nights: we are in Manhattan and The Bronx. On Tuesday nights: we’re in Queens and upper Brooklyn. And on Wednesday nights: we’re in lower Brooklyn.
What if this is my first time with cloth?
Most DK families start out as rookies - so you’re in good company. Our go-to is: keep the videos below at-the-ready and when your baby arrives, give them a refresher viewing, dive in and give it a go. Usually it takes only a few solid days to get to cruising speed.
These Videos are your most important how-to. 99.9% of our families got started with these alone. It’s true!
And on top of that...
-
•You can register for one of our monthly Cloth Diapering Classes where we can show you the ropes.
-
•Plus, upon signing up for service, we provide you with a Tips Page containing everything helpful that we can think of, step by step.
-
•Even with that, we are available via email (basically 24/7) to answer any questions.
-
•And, too, we have a Yahoo Group where you can exchange questions, comments, diaper discoveries and hand-me-downs with other DK families.
Do you host any Cloth Diapering Classes?
Yes, we do! We host a Cloth Diapering 101 Class about one night a month when we can go over everything with you in person. Just head to this link for full information, to check the next scheduled dates and to register. And we hope to see you there!
What if I’m still deciding between the various diapering options out there?
Then we’ve compiled a whole bunch of information and charted it for your review here.
Plus we have a link to a cloth diaper Lingo page that could come in handy. Take a look and shout with any questions!
How and When should we Sign-Up?
-
•You can sign up as far in advance as you’d like (we don’t charge for your order until your delivery week.)
-
•But please sign up no later than 3 weeks out - to allow time for us to stock and prep your diapers.
-
•We then arrange to deliver approximately one week in advance of your Due Date. Or asap if your baby is already here.
-
•Just go to the Order Service page to choose your options and enter your information.
-
•We’ll email you right away to confirm the diaper delivery date and details.
How does Billing work?
-
•Upon delivering your first set of diapers, we then allow a 4 week grace period for weekly service to begin.
-
•Just email us when the Big Day arrives and we’ll confirm your first pick-up/exchange date.
-
•Weekly service fees will kick in upon your first pick-up. (or after the 4 week grace period)
-
•And then reoccur each week that there is either a pick-up or a drop-off.
-
•For weeks when you ask us to skip you entirely, see “What happens when I go out of town?” below.
-
•Just email us if you’d like to cancel; aside from billing for that final pick-up week, there are no penalties.
How do Gift Vouchers work?
-
•Just direct family and friends to this link: http://www.diaperkind.com/Gift.html
-
•Here, they can purchase Gift Vouchers for you in any amount that they’d like.
-
•We then email them the voucher so that they can personally give it to you.
-
•To redeem your vouchers: We keep a tally and will automatically apply them to your account. But you can also list them in the designated area of the shopping cart whenever you sign up for service or place an order.
-
•There are two ways to check your Gift Voucher balance: If service hasn't begun yet, just send us an email. Or, after service has kicked in, your running balance is included with each week’s diaper delivery!
-
•One important note: just like any store, service or restaurant, our Gift Vouchers cannot be redeemed for cash and they expire after one year. However, they are fully transferrable and can be used for both accessories and/or service.
How many diapers am I provided?
We’ve found these quantities to be what most folks need and even allow for a few extra.
-
•Twee are provided with 180 diapers rotated over 2 weeks (90 per week)
-
•Small are provided with 160 diaper rotated over 2 weeks (80 per week)
-
•Medium are provided with 120 diapers rotated over 2 weeks (60 per week)
-
•Large are provided with 100 diapers rotated over 2 weeks (50 per week)
After delivering your full rotation of diapers over 2 weeks (half each week), we then return to you the exact number of diapers that we picked up from the week before.
Will I get the same diapers back each week?
Yes. We actually assign you an entire set of numbered diapers. Say... #121s. And we will return these exact same diapers to you each and every week.
Who supplies the Diaper Covers and Accessories?
We ask that families purchase and maintain their own diaper covers, diaper pail, fasteners, etc. These items can be purchased from us or from any source you wish. (Check out our Starter Package to see, or purchase, our recommended list of Must-Have Accessories)
Why are diaper covers not part of the service? Unfortunately the temperatures we use in our washers and dryers break down a cover’s water resistance pretty quickly. So it’s not a service that we can provide.
Who owns the Diapers when we’re done?
You are essentially renting the diapers as part of the weekly service. So when you grow out of the Small diapers, you’ll be able to try on the next size up. And as soon as you’re ready (with a week’s notice, that is), you’ll turn in all of the Smalls and we’ll swap you out for full set of Mediums (or Larges) for no additional cost - it’s all part of the service! Then, upon potty training (or cancellation), you’d turn all of the diapers back in to us at your final pick-up. All purchased accessories, however, are yours to keep - of course!
What kind of Diaper Pail should we use?
We’ve tried a million diaper pails and the one that we offer is the only one that we recommend: it’s cloth-friendly*, it’s large enough to hold a week of diapers and it really does lock any odors in tight.
*important note: if you’d prefer a pail other than the one that we offer, just be sure that it is NOT the kind that binds diapers in plastic bags. (e.g. Diaper Dekor or Diaper Champ) Cloth diapers simply cannot tolerate being bound in plastic. Think: stain city.
Instead, the best alternative is actually a lidded trash can or hamper bin with a 14+ gallon capacity.
Do you have special pricing for Twins / Multiples?
We certainly do. Please email us at info@diaperkind.com so that we can walk you through it.
What happens when I go out of town?
-
•We can put your account on hold for any reason and for any length of time.
-
•Please just give us a week’s notice so that we can still pick up your dirties on your regularly scheduled night before you leave town.
-
•Then, the set of diapers that you’re in are entirely yours to use while away - and we encourage it! (lots of DK families do this!)
Just ask us for washing instructions as needed.
-
•If you opt not to use the diapers while away, they will await your return on our shelves and in your home.
-
•For either of these 2 options, we charge $10 for Inactive Weeks.
What happens when my baby goes to Daycare?
Contrary to common belief, the Department of Health does not prohibit the use of cloth diapers in Daycare Centers. We have been in contact with the DoH’s Bureau of Childcare division and have literature from them that explains the daycare-cloth guidelines. We have also reached out to several daycare centers in Manhattan and Brooklyn and have a running list of those who are cloth-friendly. Please feel free to contact us when the time comes for this transition and we’ll be happy to help in any way that we can.
What is your complete Service Agreement?
Our complete Service Agreement is provided when completing your Sign-up and you can download a copy here.
What is your Privacy Policy?
We only ever use your email address for weekly diaper pick-up reminders or to alert you to any service changes.
And we will never share your information with any third parties. Ever.
