Your Diaper Pail (and Bag)

Using the right kind of pail and bag with cloth diapers is imperative. We’ve tried several diaper pails and the one that we sell is the only one that we recommend: it’s cloth-friendly*, it’s large enough to hold a week of diapers, and it really does lock any odors in tight.
NOTE: We only swap the bag each week - you hold onto the diaper pail.

The Diaper Bag / Pail Liner

  • You always have TWO Diaperkind bags in rotation: We have one, while you have the other.
  • We deliver your clean diapers in one bag that doubles as your pail liner.
    • ONLY use the provided Diaperkind bag to collect dirties and line your pail.
    • Do NOT use a plastic bag as your pail liner (read: mildew, mold, and stains)
    • NEVER bind your diapers in plastic bags. Ever. This causes mold and deep stains.
  • At the end of the week, the bags switch out - we take the dirties (in one bag) back to Diaperkind, while you now get the second bag (with your fresh new cleans inside).

On pickup nights, you can put out just the bag OR the bag in the pail. In either case, please cinch the bag securely closed (even if it's inside the pail), just using the drawstring toggle. Do not knot or tie the bag or drawstring, and do not wrap the drawstring around the bag (this damages your bag).

What if my bag is missing?

We supply you with a diaper bag/pail liner with every service visit. However, when schedules change or, especially if you ever self-drop, a bag/liner can get lost in the shuffle. If that happens, a super easy stand-in can be: collect your diapers loose in the pail for the week. Then, on your pickup night, transfer them to a trash/recycling bag*. When you put the trash/recycling bag out for pickup, stick a note to it saying “Diapers for the Diaperkind driver!” so that the driver knows he/she is safe to take them (and neighbors aren’t tempted to trash them). Unlabeled bags won't be picked up.

*We know that we preach "no plastic!" (for both the health of the diapers and the planet), but the diapers will be okay for just these few hours. And, so long as you tie your bag loosely (but still securely, like with a slip-knot), we'll even re-use it. Really!

The Diaper Pail

  • The Heavy Duty Diaper Pail is 14 gallons, is 16"W x 19”D x 22”H and fits approximately 90 diapers (to start, you'll use about 80 diapers per week, so it's perfect!)
  • For regular maintenance, change the Deo-Disks and Carbon Filters.
    • If your pail smells when it's open, it's time to change the Deo-Disk (~ 4-6 weeks)
    • If your pail smells while closed, it's time to change the Carbon Filter (~ 3-4 weeks)
    • Time between changes will vary based on season/temperature, and humidity
    • Pail Deodorant, while optional, adds extra odor fighting protection to your daily routine
  • For occasional maintenance, wipe the walls of the pail down with a water/chlorine bleach solution (optional)

Diaper Pail Alternatives

  • The Large Dekor and Large Ubbi pail CAN be used. However, beware: they each fit ~60 diapers. For new families, that's not enough for a full week of dirty diapers (only about 75% of what you'll produce).  So, with either of these pails, have an overflow plan*.
  • Alternatively, any lidded 14-gallon+ hamper/bin works too (still: no plastic bags)

*Overflow Plan (and multiple bags)

  • We automatically include two rotating bags per set of diapers. The bag in your possession doubles as your pail liner (take the clean ones out and use the empty bag to line your pail)
  • If you have pail overflow (or a second changing station):
    • You can purchase a second pail, or
    • You can collect them in a second bag.
  • In both cases, we can happily provide you with an extra bag (just email us to let us know). However, still turn in just the one bag (per set of diapers) each week. Shake the contents of the overflow bag into one bag, and turn in just the one bag for laundering (and launder the overflow bag with your household laundry).

We promise we're not bag misers. In fact, we're happy to provide you with those extra bags!
The issue: Our laundry team bags one set of diapers into one bag. So, rather than you missing your extra overflow bag (nearly) every week, we figure: just hold onto the one extra bag and launder it with your regular household laundry. In summation, on our end, we can only commit to rotating one bag per set of diapers each week.

For Twins and Multiples, the above doesn't quite apply. Because you're assigned multiple sets of diapers, you automatically get as many bags as you have sets (but if you need more than that, then the above still counts).
